Public Mobile Referral Codes for Existing Customers: What You Can (and Can't) Do

Updated 2026-07-13 · fact-checked against official Public Mobile sources

No — Public Mobile referral codes only work on brand-new activations. An existing customer cannot apply a code to their own account, and self-referral is not allowed. What you can do: share your own code and earn 1 Public Point every 30 days per active referral (1 point = $1), plus use promo codes when Public Mobile offers them.

The short answer

Public Mobile referral codes are for new customers only. The “Referral Code” field appears exactly once — at Step 4 (Payment) of online activation — and there is no place in My Account to enter one later. If you already have Public Mobile service, you cannot apply a code to your own account, and you cannot use your own code to refer yourself.

That is the bad news. The good news: as an existing customer you are on the earning side of the program, and the earning side has no cap.

Why existing accounts don’t qualify

Public Mobile’s referral terms limit the $10 credit to “new mobility activations.” Two rules follow from that:

There is one real exception: if you activated recently and simply forgot to enter a code, a support agent can add it through a support ticket. Public Mobile staff confirmed this in December 2025 — the agent needs the referrer’s name, phone number, and code. Full steps are in our guide to adding a code after activation. That path is for new customers who missed the field, not for long-standing accounts.

What existing customers get instead

1. Points for referring new customers

This is the main benefit, and it is genuinely good: 1 Public Point every 30 days for each person you refer, for as long as they stay a customer. There is no limit on how many people you can refer, and your code never expires while your account is active.

Since 1 point = $1 when redeemed (the standard redemption is 15 points = $15 off your bill), each referral is worth about $12 a year, forever. Refer five people and that is roughly $60 a year off your phone bill. Refer fifteen and your bill drops by $15 every month, indefinitely.

One honest note: every referral code gives the new customer the same $10 credit. There is no “better” code — so the only reason a friend should use yours over a stranger’s is that they like you. Details on the earning side are in our refer-a-friend guide.

2. Promo codes (a different thing entirely)

Promo codes are Public Mobile’s own limited-time offers and live in a separate field from the referral code at checkout — the two stack when both are available. Most promo codes target new activations, but offers come and go near-monthly. The recent PMDATA10 code (10GB of free data) ended June 26, 2026. We track what is live on our promo code page.

3. Points-back and anniversary points

Every payment earns 2% back in points, and each 12-month anniversary adds 5 points. Both were cut in the October 15, 2025 rewards change (from 5% and 10 points) — but the referral earn rate was left untouched, which makes referrals the strongest earner left in the program. Our Public Points guide covers redemption.

How to share your code so it actually counts

  1. Find it: top of My Account, under the “Sharing is caring” banner. It is 6 characters, letters and numbers.
  2. Share it as a link: https://publicmobile.ca/en/on/plans?referral=YOURCODE (swap on for your friend’s province). The link pre-fills the code at checkout, which prevents typos.
  3. Tell your friend where it goes: the “Referral Code” field at Step 4 (Payment), entered before paying. It is not the Promo code field — mixing those up is the most common failure. Point them at our how-to guide.
  4. Warn them about the Koodo ads. TELUS shows Koodo “Fast Switch” upsell ads inside the Public Mobile signup flow, and referred friends have ended up activating on Koodo — where referral codes do not work. They need to stay on publicmobile.ca the whole way through.
  5. If they forget the code, they can open a support ticket within a few days of activating. The agent will need your name, your phone number, and the code.

You can track successful referrals in the My Referrals section of My Account. Referral counts update daily, and your point lands at the end of each 30-day cycle. If a referral does not show up, our fix guide covers what to do.

Not a customer yet?

Then this page flips in your favour: enter the referral code on this page (or any friend’s code) during activation and you get a one-time $10 credit, applied within 72 hours. It works on any plan, and you can open Public Mobile’s plans with the code pre-applied. After that, it will be your code earning the points.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a referral code to my existing Public Mobile account?

No. Referral codes only apply to new activations, and there is no field in My Account to enter one. The only exception is if you activated recently and forgot the code — see our guide to adding a code after activation.

Can I use my own referral code to activate a second line?

No. Public Mobile does not allow self-referral. If you activate a second line, use someone else's code — the new line is a new activation, but your own code will not earn you anything on it.

Where do I find my Public Mobile referral code?

Log in to My Account. Your 6-character code sits at the top of the overview page under the 'Sharing is caring' banner. It never changes and never expires while your account is active.

How much do I earn for each person I refer?

1 Public Point every 30 days for each referral who stays a customer — about $12 per year, per person, with no cap. 1 point equals $1 when redeemed, and 15 points takes $15 off your bill. See our Public Points guide.

Is there a referral bonus for existing customers right now?

No. The last bonus round ($10 per referral, limit 5) ended October 6, 2025. As of July 13, 2026 the standard offer applies: your friend gets $10 and you earn 1 point per 30 days. Check the current offer for updates.

Do I lose points when a referral cancels their service?

You stop earning that person's monthly point, but points already in your balance stay there as long as your own account remains active. If your account deactivates, unredeemed points are lost.
